Language vs. Dialect

In this truly fascinating post, the Atlantic quotes linguist and Yiddish-speaker Max Weinreich, who says that “a language is a dialect with an army and a navy.” Why are Danish and Swedish considered two different languages, but Cantonese and Mandarin two dialects of the same language? Real-Time Translation on Skype

Skype has officially released it's latest translation update, anticipated by many, for Windows desktop users! According to this post by Language Magazine, “the program offers immediate voice-to-voice translation in seven languages – English, French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Portuguese, and Spanish – and instant message translation in 50 additional languages.” Want to try it out?
