Translator Newsletter: Dialects, Modern Technology, & More!
Translations
Hello, GV'ers!
Welcome to this week's edition of the Translator Newsletter! Today we're talking about…
ALTA's Translation Tip of the Week
ALTA recently started a new series where they post new tips and best practices for translators every week. This week, they're talking about glossaries! Glossaries are useful when you have many ongoing translation jobs in a specific industry or field. They can save you lots of time and improve the accuracy of your translations. Modern Technology & Translation
Ever wonder how things like CAT tools and digital dictionaries have changed the translation industry? With the advent of new technology, are there new types of translation jobs out there? Translator Family talks about all of this and more in their post entitled, “How has modern technology changed the translation industry?” Read it here!
Language vs. Dialect
What's the difference, anyway? In this truly fascinating post, the Atlantic quotes linguist and Yiddish-speaker Max Weinreich, who says that “a language is a dialect with an army and a navy.” Why are Danish and Swedish considered two different languages, but Cantonese and Mandarin two dialects of the same language? Take a look and let us know what you think!
Real-Time Translation on Skype
Skype has officially released it's latest translation update, anticipated by many, for Windows desktop users! According to this post by Language Magazine, “the program offers immediate voice-to-voice translation in seven languages – English, French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Portuguese, and Spanish – and instant message translation in 50 additional languages.” Want to try it out? Call a GV'er who speaks one of those languages and let us know how it goes!
