Welcome to this week's edition of the Translator Newsletter! Today we're talking about…
Machine Translation In Your Life
I know, I know. This whole time we've been hearing about how terrible machine translation is, but can it really play an important role in our careers as translators? Spence Green, a co-founder ofLilt, a provider of interactive translation systems, explores this topic on The Language of Translation Blog in a post called
“Why machine translation should have a role in your life. Really!”
What ISN'T translation?
There are tons of misconceptions about the translation industry out there — it's a dying field, it's just an exchange of words, and so much more. The people over at Business 2 Community took matters into their own hands and made this list called “11 Things a Translation is Not” to debunk some common translation myths. Take a look and let us know if there are any you'd add!
As translators, our job is to bridge language barriers and spread information from one tongue to another. But even the best of the best of us stumble upon words that are simply untranslatable. Every culture out there has different customs that shape them and make them unique from others. Lifehack put together a list of some of these words and artist Marija Tiurina created fourteen beautiful illustrations to go along with them. Do you recognize any of these words? Do you have any of your own to share? Tell us!
Translation Saves Lives
Did you ever think about how translation can improve the lives of thousands of people? According to this article entitled “How Translation Improves Health Literacy and Reduces Health Care Costs” , “immigrant and limited English proficient populations benefit immensely from access to health information in the languages they understand best.” Read on to learn about how translating health information to languages other than English can help people live better lives!
For the New Yorkers
If you happen to be in the good ol’ city of New York on April 28th, join me for this great panel called Translating Activism: Ayotzinapa & Beyond at the PEN World Voices Festival . The best part is that it's 100% free to attend!
