Global Voices is on Mastodon (and back on Tumblr)!

Categories: Announcements, Design, GV Guides

In light of recent events, we've been working to make sure you can find our international stories wherever you are!

GV is on Mastodon!

Please follow and share our stories! It's nothing elaborate, but all our RSS posts should be there and ready for interaction. If anyone wants to set up a similar RSS->Mastodon hookup with IFTTT [2], it's a bit complicated but these instructions from hyperborea.org [3] work if you follow them carefully.

GV is back on Tumblr!

We had a vibrant Tumblr back in the day (over 30k followers!), but had stopped updating it. Well, no more! I figured out a setup that posts all our RSS stories onto Tumblr, so please follow, like and reshare our work if you're on Tumblr!

In the case of Tumblr I couldn't find a good guide for importing RSS, so I made one! You can see my analysis of the different options and tips for making it work with in my video guide about importing RSS into Tumblr with dlvr.it [5].

Mastodon posts can be embedded in GV WordPress articles!

I did some testing and added some theme styles to make Mastodon posts work well and look OK on GV, so it is officially safe to embed them if they are important for your stories! Detailed instructions can be found with the other embed types in the WordPress Posting Guide on the Community site:

Here's an example:

Note that unlike Twitter embeds, Mastodon posts will be completely empty and gone if the post or server is deleted. So whenever possible, write your posts in a way that will still make some sense if the embed goes away. Twitter was the only service that had embeds that could survive the removal of the source content, which really was a great thing about Twitter. The rule about Mastodon also applies to Facebook, Instagram, YouTube etc.

Please let me know if you have any issues with them!
