If you've ever wondered where the other members of this massively distributed global community produce their stories and translations, scroll down to see some of those places workspaces! (See Part 2 for more photos).
Rahma (Northern Governorate, Bahrain):
“This cozy downtown cafe is one of my favorite spots to work (I work remotely) and contribute to Global Voices. I don’t have the most decent workspace at home, so this cafe has become my lifesaver!”
Melissa (Beloeil, Belgium):
“So grateful to have a designated workspace nowadays. The cloth is from a trip to Jordan (where we had a Global Voices symposium), the pots are from El Salvador, the frame keeps me motivated, and the ball helps my posture just a tiny bit, hehe!”
Jer (Mexico City):
“I am very picky about my workspace! When we moved into our new apartment I spent a lot of time imagining and planning it to get the right lighting both for comfort and to look good on video calls 💅🏻.
I have my sit/stand desk (shown here in standing mode) with the window to the left, so I can stare at the trees, and my video light on the right, which is bright enough to feel a bit like another window.
Of course the most important feature is my Siberian cat Hibou, who is watching to make sure I don't slack off 😼”
Juliette (Yaoundé, Cameroon):
“Between motherhood and professional work 😊. A perfect blend 👌.”
Pei-Chi (Taipei, Taiwan):
“I live in the mountains in northern Taipei. From my workspace, I can see both the mountains and the sea. It’s a bit far from downtown, but I love it. There’s a sense of peace living and working from here :)”
Gina (Quito, Ecuador):
“Cada vez que me siento a escribir para Global Voices, mi gata Maggie se coloca detrás de la computadora para que le haga caricias. Siempre me acompaña en cualquier lugar que me encuentro en casa. Me gusta escribir acompañada de la luz del día y el silencio de la mañana.”
“Whenever I sit down to write for Global Voices, my cat Maggie positions herself behind the computer so I can pet her. She follows me all over the house. I enjoy writing by the light of day, savoring the morning quiet.”
Louis (Kigali, Rwanda):
“This is my chamber and office where I work and write most of my GV articles.”
Gabriela (Lima, Peru):
“It's a corner in my not so big apartment that faces no window. I like to work while hearing music. Although I don't like noise, I can't work in silence. So, music is my partner while working. The problem comes when I like the song and start singing… and get distracted! This is a so personal corner that my “order” can be there for many days in a row.”
Mamisoa (Madagascar):
“My workspace is located in a rural area, which provides a quiet and inspiring environment for both working and teaching. It includes a small dedicated space where I freely teach French to local children, especially in a community where there is no access to a language school.”
Emma (Kingston, Jamaica):
“My workspace is a corner of the house, with window views to the garden. Sometimes (as an avid birder) I am distracted by birds on the windowsill! My beautiful carved Buddha (bought in Sri Lanka when I attended the GV Summit) and art calendar, as well as a cluster of Avocets (graceful British wetland birds) keep me company. My desk can get a little chaotic. My amazing iMac is my hub!.”
