As part of Global Voices’ fundraising challenge campaign called “Behind the Story,” we will feature 30 contributors in 30 days. In this series, we ask each contributor about a particular story they have written and why working on it mattered to them. These reflections from these contributors remind us why it is important to ensure that the Global Voices Newsroom is sustainable.

In this insight, Juliana Harsianti from Indonesia shares thoughts on why working on the story “Cyberbullying hinders women’s participation in Indonesia’s 2024 elections” was especially meaningful.

I worked with the Civic Media Observatory team to analyze the narratives about cyberbullying towards women during the 2024 election cycle in Indonesia. Powerful election participants used cyberspace as their battleground, and women who worked on election-related issues were caught in the middle, becoming targets of one of the worst instances of cyberbullying in Indonesian history.

As the most powerful election participants went into cyberspace as their battleground, women who worked related with the election issues, caught in the middle, must experience one of the worst cyberbullying in Indonesia history.
