Global Voices Asia Pacific Citizen Media Summit 2019

Dear Global Voices community members,

Global Voices Asia Pacific Citizen Media Summit 2019 will take place in Taipei, Taiwan from May 30 to June 2. It is set to provide a platform to gather concerned journalists, digital activists, researchers and their partner organizations to share their experiences, gain knowledge, and form new collaborations.

The Summit program consists of two-day media organizations’ internal meeting, one-day workshop and one-day public talks. You can find the Summit program on June 1 and June 2 below this article.

The workshop held on June 1 consists of internet security training and discussions focusing on disinformation challenge, Asia-Pacific cross-regional collaborations, and digital rights advocacy agenda.

The public talks held on June 2 will address new techno-political challenges and in particular the implication on internet rights and activism, digital security and privacy, digital divide and the development challenges.

The theme of the public talks in the morning session is “The rise and challenges of digital authoritarianism in Asia Pacific”. The morning session addresses the emergence of different forms of digital authoritarianism – from authoritative China model to populist Philippine and India model. The theme of the public talks in the afternoon session is “Citizens’ response to digital authoritarianism”. The afternoon session addresses citizen initiatives in response to the new digital environment – from open technology and open data to online social movement. Each session will have one-hour plenary presentation made by two speakers and one-hour presentation and comments made by four panelists, and followed by 30-min open floor discussion.

Global Voices is a nonprofit citizen media organization with more than 800 community members who are citizen journalists, researchers, digital rights activists and translators from around the world. Global Voices carries out most of its work virtually over the Internet, but is incorporated in the Netherlands.

The upcoming Summit, funded by Taiwan Foundation for Democracy and Open Technology Foundation and co-hosted by the Chang Fo-Chuan Center for the Study of Human Right at Soochow University in Taiwan, is an attempt for the organization to build a stronger and more rooted network in the region.

We genuinely hope that you can join us in the Global Voices Asia-Pacific Citizen Media Summit 2019. Due to the limited number of people for the one-day workshop on June 1, if you are interested in participation, please feel free to contact us.

Notes: This is not a usual GV summit. This is a regional summit. Below is the information pasted from Georgia’s previous announcement about it:
‘The idea for the meeting was initiated, and planning and fundraising spearheaded by the Asia team themselves, led by our East Asia editor Oiwan and community member I-Fan, with support from our Asia editors Rezwan and Mong.’
‘The budget for this regional summit is very limited, so we can only cover travel and accommodation costs for a select group of contributors in the Asia-Pacific region. But if anyone else is interested in attending and wishes to fund themselves, please get in touch.’
